We consider five factors during our extensive\nLASIK surgical evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>General health:<\/strong>\nIf you have good general health overall, you will likely be a candidate.\nCertain health issues like diabetes, heart issues, and autoimmune diseases,\nsuch as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, put patients at higher risk. Some\nmedications like acne drugs or corticosteroids interfere with healing. When you\ncome see us, bring your complete health history with you to discuss with our\nteam. We are also happy to work directly with your general health practitioner.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eye health:<\/strong> Your eye health is also a\nfactor. If you have other conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, or other ocular\ndiseases, you may not be a good candidate for LASIK. We will perform a complete\neye examination using sophisticated tests designed to screen for all of these\nissues. We don\u2019t perform LASIK on people who don\u2019t have ocular maturity,\nmeaning you must have a stable prescription that has not changed for at least\ntwo years. Most people will reach ocular maturity by age 18, so people over age\n18 are generally candidates for LASIK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Corneal health:<\/strong> During our extensive eye\nexamination, we will closely examine the health of your cornea, looking for\ncorneas that may be too thin or misshapen. Because LASIK is designed to reshape\nthe cornea to correct vision, the presence of these issues might mean that you\nare not a good LASIK candidate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vision correction needed: <\/strong>At Eye Consultants of\nPennsylvania, we use the bladeless LASIK technique, also called the all-laser\ntechnique. By using lasers, we can correct higher levels of refractive error\nfor nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. In general, we can correct\nfor up to -12 diopters for nearsightedness, +6 diopters for farsightedness, and\nup to 6 diopters for astigmatism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expectations: <\/strong>Last but not least, we factor in\nyour expectations for the LASIK procedure. LASIK is wonderful and can correct\nhigher levels of refractive error, but it does have limitations. It is\nimportant that your expectations are in line with any limitations we might see\nso that you feel like you have a satisfactory surgical outcome.
