If\nyou are worried about your cataract surgery, don\u2019t be. Cataract surgeries are\nshort and sweet and, best of all, uneventful. Let\u2019s explore the\ndos and don\u2019ts after cataract surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cataract\nsurgeries usually take about 10 minutes to perform. We only operate on one eye\nat a time, so the procedure goes relatively quickly. We have a recovery area\nwhere you will rest for about 30 minutes after surgery, or longer if you remain\ngroggy from the anesthesia. You\u2019ll have to have someone there to drive you\nhome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While\nsome patients experience clear vision within hours of the cataract surgery,\nyour vision may be blurry for a while as your eye adjusts to the new lens\nimplant we have placed in your eye to replace your cloudy natural lens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nwhite part of your eye may be red from broken blood vessels, which is\ncompletely normal and usually resolves itself in a few days. You may also have\nsome bruising under your eye that resembles a black eye; once again, this is\nnormal and fades in a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dos and Don\u2019ts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One\nof the most common annoyances people have after cataract surgery is a dry eye\nfeeling. The eye can almost feel itchy, as if you need to scratch it, but\nplease resist the urge to rub your eyes. Rubbing can push the new lens out of\nplace. The itchy sensation gets better each day as your eye heals. If you had\ndry eye before, the condition could be more pronounced immediately after your\nsurgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do\ntake the medications we prescribe you. We will send you home with both\nantibiotic eye drops to prevent infection as well as an eye drop to reduce eye\ninflammation. For the first week after your surgery, you will need to apply the\ndrops several times per day. Don\u2019t miss a dose, and use them exactly as\nprescribed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time to Heal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One\nof our biggest problems is patients who overdo it and try to do too much too\nsoon. While you may feel great after your surgery, you need to slowly phase\nback into a normal daily routine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately\nafter the surgery, avoid bending over as it puts added pressure on your eye.\nTry not to sneeze for the same reasons. Do not drive the day after your\nsurgery. We don\u2019t want you to do any strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for\nthe first few weeks after your surgery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nyour eye heals, you need to stay out of swimming pools or hot tubs, at least\nfor the first week. Furthermore, stay away from areas with dust and pollen for\na few weeks to avoid getting these irritants in your eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nlist above has a lot of don\u2019ts, but there are a few things you can do a few\nhours after surgery, like take a shower or bath, or do light computer work or\nwatch a little television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
